While travel nurse staffing agencies and some facilities may offer assistance, nurses are responsible for obtaining and maintaining their nursing license. Fortunately, nurses don’t have to obtain a license every time they take an assignment in a new state due to the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement (NLC). This allows RNs (as well as LVNs and LPNs) to have a single multistate license, with the ability to practice in any one of the states that are part of this agreement without having to get an individual license for each one.

With Indiana becoming the newest compact license state as of July 1, 2020, travel nurses can more easily take advantage of assignments here, enjoying everything from small-town charms to the bustling large cities. Healthcare travelers accept jobs here can enjoy the low cost of living that allows them to stretch their money further, making the most of the experience by exploring different places, sampling mouthwatering foods at new restaurants, and visiting all sorts of attractions (and practice social distancing while doing so!).

A wealth of other attractions can be enjoyed in Indianapolis too, making the city a fun place to work or visit during your off time. White River State Park hosts the Indianapolis Zoo, a botanical garden, aquarium, and zoo all in one. This attraction is a great way to get outside while also practicing social distancing (face masks are required).

The Mass Ave Arts District is a five-block area filled with quirky shops, restaurants, art galleries, and theaters, as Indianapolis’ cultural hub. History enthusiasts can wander through the Lockerbie Square Historic District. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it’s the oldest remaining residential neighborhood downtown. The former home of James Whitcomb Riley, the city’s own highly esteemed poet, can be toured. The Victoria-era home contains antique furnishings from the period, while his clothes, hats and an antique pen are still in his room.

You’ll even find a beautiful coast to explore in Indiana Dunes State Park. It sits at the southern tip of Lake Michigan with 15 miles of coastline, bringing opportunities to swim from Central Avenue beach, fish, rent a boat or hike the 70 miles of trails. It’s a birdwatcher’s haven too with over 300 species of birds.

Spencer is home to a beautiful state park, McCormick’s Creek, which offers more than 10 miles of trails passing through forest and native wildflowers, leading to Twin Bridges, Wolf Cave, and a pretty waterfall. Guided horseback rides are available, and at the amphitheater, concerts and other cultural events take place occasionally too. After a day in the park, you can visit Owen Valley Winery to sample the offerings in the tasting room or on the porch that overlooks the vines.

Evansville offers many great attractions, including interesting museums, but the most intriguing may be the Angel Mounds State Historic Site which sits along the Ohio River just outside the city. The country’s most well-preserved site of prehistoric Native American culture and a National Historic Landmark, it was built over nearly five centuries, between 1000 and 1450 AD by Middle Mississippian Native Americans. In addition to a model museum that depicts their daily life, there are hiking and biking trails along with seasonal events.
