If you’re looking for southern charm, beautiful scenery, rich history, and a wealth of outdoor adventure, a Kentucky travel nursing job may be right for you. Here are six reasons to consider a travel assignment in the Bluegrass state, with a particular focus on the great things you can do outside the medical facility.
1. CHECK OUT THE NEARLY 400 MILES OF CAVES AT MAMMOTH CAVE NATIONAL PARK
You’ll be working in the same state as what’s believed to be the longest known cave system in the world. Mammoth Cave National Park preserves nearly 400 miles of caves, along with countless more that are yet to be charted. Check out the formations of stalagmites and stalactites naturally carved from stone and eroded by water. The crystal columns, suspended from the ceilings, appear as if they were sprinkled with fairy dust, and in low light, cast eerie shadows.
Explore a section of the cave on your own during the summertime—otherwise you’ll need to take a ranger-led tour. The Historic Tour is a favorite, with visitors stepping inside through the natural entrance before exploring some 2 miles of cave passages and several old mining areas.
2. HIKE THE RED RIVER GORGE
Tucked within the Daniel Boone National Forest, the Red River Gorge is a breathtaking wonderland of waterfalls, cliffs, serene mountain pools, and some 100 natural arches. Hike to Sky Bridge and you’ll be rewarded with a spectacular panoramic view of the impressive—seemingly endless—wilderness. A 10-mile trek from the gorge entrance will bring you to Natural Bridge, a 78-foot-long and 65-foot-high bridge that was carved by the elements over 65 million years.
3. TOUR THE KENTUCKY HORSE PARK
Lexington is considered the “Horse Capital of the World,” home to countless horse farms and the Kentucky Horse Park, a working horse farm and educational theme park. By taking a tour, you can meet celebrity horses in the Hall of Champions—an elite group of champion equine—check out the interesting breeds at the Parade of Breeds Show, meet the police horses on the walking barn tour, explore the blacksmith facility, and more.
4. TASTE KENTUCKY’S SIGNATURE SPIRIT ON THE BOURBON TRAIL
The Urban Bourbon Trail offers the chance to tour and taste some 50 to 165 different varieties of Kentucky’s signature spirit, bourbon. The trail connects Louisville’s world-class bourbon bars, including nearly 30 establishments, all of which stock at least 50 bourbons and offer knowledgeable staff to answer your questions along with tasting flights and classic bourbon-based cocktails.
5. GET OUT ON THE WATER AT LAND BETWEEN THE LAKES
The Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area is a renowned water sports mecca set across a 360-square-mile peninsula. Not only can you come here to cool off with a refreshing swim, enjoy boating, water skiing, fishing, and more, but you’ll also have the opportunity to view all sorts of wildlife, including deer, bobcats, ospreys, and eagles.
