With 17 high-ranking medical centers and hospitals, Boston is a popular destination for travel nurses. But what does the city offer outside of your assigned healthcare facility? The largest city in New England is easily navigable, with a population of under 700,0000—yet it packs a punch for travel nurses when it comes to things to see and do.

1. STROLLS ON THE FREEDOM TRAIL

If you like to walk and are fascinated with American history, there are few better places to be than Boston. While the city is home to a number of historic sites, the 2.5-mile Freedom Trail is the city’s most popular attraction. With a Boston travel nursing job, you can look forward to strolling the trail between shifts anytime you like. The red stripe marking the Freedom Trail traverses through Boston’s most historic neighborhoods, showcasing 16 sites related to the Revolutionary War.

2. CHEER ON THE HOME TEAM

Even if you aren’t a baseball fan, catching a Red Sox game at Fenway Park is an unforgettable experience. The iconic ballpark offers the chance to mingle with some of baseball’s most legendary fans while enjoying tasty eats like Fenway Franks with a beer from the Bleacher Bar.

3. READ A BOOK IN THE COURTYARD OF THE COUNTRY’S OLDEST FREE-LENDING LIBRARY

While reading a book is something you can do anywhere, taking an assignment in Boston means convenient access to the country’s oldest free-lending library. Designed as a “palace for the people,” it features an Italian Renaissance-style interior courtyard, complete with arched pathways and bubbling fountains that serves as one of the city’s most tranquil spots for reading.

4.  PICNICKING, BIKING, HISTORY AND MORE ON CASTLE ISLAND

Castle Island in South Boston is one of the city’s most picturesque shoreline parks, as well as one of the oldest fortified military sites in North America. The pentagonal granite bastion known as Fort Independence is its centerpiece, situated at the ocean end; Castle Island also offers 22 acres of beach, paths for cycling and lots of idyllic places for picnicking. If you don’t want to bring your own food-filled basket, Sullivan’s is a Castle Island institution renowned for its fried clams and lobster rolls.

5. EXPLORING THE MUSEUMS

There are so many museums in Boston—if you hope to experience them all, you’ll probably need to stick around longer than a 13-week assignment. For those with limited time, some of the top museums to visit include the Institute of Contemporary Art, or ICA, located on the South Boston waterfront. A stunning building that’s all sharp angles and glass, the modern art it holds inside is an eclectic blend with many fun and funky exhibits. The Museum of Science is the place to go for dinosaurs, space, and much more. It hosts a planetarium and the Mugar Omni Theater, which showcases IMAX films that make you feel as if you’re really in the movie.

The Museum of Fine Arts, the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, the Peabody Essex Museum, and the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum are just a few of the other highlights.
